Turmeric scientifically known as Curcuma Longa, is a traditional indian spice. Turmeric has been used as an everyday product in most of Indian households. Apart from its health benefits it is beneficial in skin ailments too. Turmeric as herbal medicine is considered to be a super-food and a wonder drug in most of South Asia. India amongst the highest producer of turmeric consumes and exports the most of  this spice in the world.

Turmeric contains polyphenol curcumin which is a micronutrient antioxidant which contains lots of beneficial properties. There have been research conducted which shows that cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes can be prevented by the consumption of turmeric.

According to NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information), USA turmeric has minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, iron, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, ascorbic acid, omega-3 fatty acid and alpha-linolenic acid. An article which was published in NCBI states the use of turmeric in Ayurveda dating back to 250 BC. It also reveals that it has been a traditional medicine for nearly 4000 years.

Turmeric as herbal medicine

In Ayurveda, turmeric holds power to cure various ailments. Few of the uses of turmeric are in strengthening the overall energy of the body, relieving gastric troubles, improving digestion, regulating menstruation, treatment of respiratory conditions, diabetic wounds, runny nose, cough, sinusitis and it goes on. Turmeric as herbal medicine benefits in skin diseases and purifying blood. This is because of the curcumin present  which has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Turmeric for Kids-

Turmeric can be given to kids based on baby’s weight, 1/4 to 1/2 tsp can be mixed with natural food. For kids above 10 years of age 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp of turmeric powder per day can be given as per their weight.

Turmeric milk is best for children. You can use 1/4 to 1/2 tsp turmeric powder for a small cup of milk. Bring it boil, add honey and give it to your child.
